You could call it the Tale of Two Expo's. One scheduled for Sydney that isn't happening and one in Queensland that has doubled its footprint in only 12 months. Similar industries, very different results.
After a year which Retravision NSW could rate as its annus horribilus, last week the group has cancelled what had become a local institution, its annual buying meeting. Several reasons have been mooted to explain the cancellation. But most observers know the true causes go far deeper and are more systemic than economic or logistical explanations.
Meanwhile, further north the sun couldn't have shined brighter on the CEDIA Expo 2006 last week. This group has managed to harness the technology around the hottest trend in years: convergence. The quality of the displays at this event also engendered a strong sense of the premium prices that consumers would be prepared to pay to have their homes integrated with the latest appliances.
It's not my place to judge Retravision NSW, many others will do that. But letting go of the past can often be positive if anyone is to move forward. Retravision has as much opportunity to embrace success as any other organisation in this industry.
Enjoy.
