Telecommunications in is about to undergo the most radical change since the introduction of broadband in the year 2000. This presentation covers telecommunications in general, with a particular focus on those areas which impact on entertainment and control systems inside the house – especially broadband data and optical fibre-delivered services. 

These services will be explained in some detail within the context of the Australian Government National Broadband Network (NBN) using fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP). The presentation will explain the high-level architecture and design of telecommunications networks including hierarchies and topologies. The presentation will also outline various telecommunications technologies, including traditional voice telephony and switching, analogue and digital data transmission, packetized data networks, and internetworking (IP). Twisted pair cable technologies and techniques will be explained and some network performance measures such as Grade of Service and Quality of Service will be explained, particularly as they relate to content delivery. ADSL and wireless technologies will be covered briefly, optical fibre network design and techniques will explained, and a number of competing technologies and standards will be compared. This presentation is suitable for those people who are interested in understanding how telecommunication networks function, and more importantly, how they are likely to change in the next few years.
